Phoenix Police Department Chief Jeri Williams has reassigned about 170 officers to patrol duty in an attempt to beef up its police presence on the street and better police response time. Hiring has been essentially frozen since the economic crisis of 2008, leading to a decrease in law enforcement staff from about 3,400 in 2008 to about 2,700 today.
Overtime is often required of officers, and the budget for the current fiscal year has nearly been reached only five months in. Phoenix Law Enforcement Association President Ken Crane stated he believed the situation to be quite drastic, citing the staffing deficit, skyrocketing overtime costs and the overwork and decreased morale of the current staff.
