Phoenix Police Department union representatives have described the current state of staffing within the Department as a crisis, citing reduced staffing leading to overtime costs and overwork for its officers. Hiring has essentially been frozen in the wake of the economic crisis of 2008, leading to a 10% reduction in the number of officers on the force today versus 2008.
More than six months into her role as the new Chief of Police for the Department, Chief Jeri Williams has been criticized for recently reassigning officers to regular patrols in an attempt to improve police presence and response times within the limits of the budget.
Further, a look at the numbers involved shows the problem may not be a lack of funding, as the budget has increased commensurate with inflation while the number of dispatch calls and reports of major crimes have both declined.
