Oral arguments were heard Tuesday in the New York Court of Appeals, the State’s highest court, in Facebook’s ongoing battle with the New York County District Attorney’s Office over bulk search warrants for account/user data.
The case stems from the 2013 issuance of search warrants for 381 Facebook users’ data , including data from 24 broad categories including subscriber and account information, photos, Groups associations, Public and Private messages, Notes, Friends, Likes, etc. Data obtained as a result of the warrants resulted in charges against only 62 of the targeted 381 Facebook users, or just over 16%.
At issue is the New York appellate court’s decision denying Facebook’s motion to quash the search warrants, and their ruling denying Facebook has the legal standing to object to the warrants.
Facebook reports it received over 23,000 requests for user information in the first 6 months of 2016.
