DUI Defendants Can Now Serve Jail in Scottsdale

Jail Cell BarsThe Scottsdale Police Department has reopened its jail to allow DUI defendants to serve one or two day sentences in their jail.  The Jail will accept sentences imposed by most courts and not just the Scottsdale Municipal Court.

The current jail capacity is limited to 8 defendants per day. The current cost is $250 plus .425% transaction fee per day as compared to $396.98 for 1 day and $102.55 for a second day (total for 2 days $499.53) in the Maricopa County Jail, effective July 1, 2020.

Other differences between serving the sentence in the Scottsdale Jail and the Maricopa County Jail are:

  1. In Scottsdale a “day” is 24 hours whereas in the County Jail a day can be much less than 24 hours;
  2. The only surrender time in Scottsdale is 7 a.m. whereas in the county jail it can be any time;
  3. Sentences served in Scottsdale can be no more than 2 days whereas any length sentence can be served in the County Jail;
  4. The Scottsdale Jail will not accept anyone with significant health problems;
  5. An advantage in serving the sentence in Scottsdale is since the jail capacity is limited the defendant will come into contact with far fewer individuals than in the County jail.

Here you can find more information about the police department’s website as well as their flyer describing the program and instructions current as of July 28, 2020.
