Current Maricopa County Jail Costs

Jail Cell Bars

5/10/21  It is of particular importance in a second offense DUI situation to make sure the amount charged by the court for Maricopa County Jail fees is correct; although this fact is sometimes unknown and other times simply overlooked, the jail rates for second offense sentences are 50% less than for first offenses.

For instance, if a person is convicted of a second offense .08% DUI and sentenced to serve the mandatory minimum of 30 days in jail, as of July 1st the court might mistakenly charge that person $3,210.12 in jail fees ($442.36 1st day booking fee, plus $95.44 per day thereafter), when in fact the correct amount assessed should be $1,605.06.  That is a big mistake but unfortunately many courts, including justice courts, may not be sure to use the correct rates, literally doubling the amount imposed.

For the fiscal year 2022 rates, Maricopa County has adjusted their housing and booking rates to reflect credit for funding provided via the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act.  Having said that, the Booking Rate still went up significantly.

If you are required to serve a jail sentence in the Maricopa County Jail, current jail rates are:

Year          Booking     Housing
2020-21     $396.98     $102.55

Effective July 1, 2021 the 2021-2022 daily rates are as follows:

Year          Gross Booking     Gross Housing
2020-21     $611.84                $134.20

Year          Net Booking     Net Housing
2020-21     $442.36            $95.44

You can find jail per diem rates on the Maricopa.gov website.  If you must serve a jail sentence in the Maricopa County Jail system, I would encourage you to visit the site, print out the current amounts and take them to court with you.

Maricopa County Jail costs have more than doubled in the past 10 years, well above the rate of inflation.  In fact, without taking the CARES Act credit into consideration between 2021 and 2022 the Daily Rate increased by 30% and the Booking Rate increased by 54%.
