A recent Associated Press investigation documents the abuse nationwide of confidential law enforcement database information by police and other government employees.
Public records requests uncovered more than 325 such instances leading to the firing, suspension or resignation of police or state employees between 2013 and 2015 alone. Records provided were reportedly incomplete at best, and some states and police agencies reported misuse is not tracked. Indeed, because such cases are a small fraction of the millions of legitimate database inquiries, it is difficult to detect and distinguish when abuse occurs unless a complaint is received. Therefore, the actual scope of the abuse is unknown.
Some of the documented examples of the use of confidential information for inappropriate and sometimes outright criminal purposes include stalking, harassment, romantic quarrels, personal or professional conflicts and just plain old nosiness.
