NYU School of Law study indicates violent crime in AZ down 30% while incarceration rate up 10%

6/21/16  A recent report by the New York University School of Law’s Brennan Center for Justice indicated a national trend in the reduction of violent crime, including an overall 7% reduction in the national imprisonment rate.

Unlike every other state, Arizona requires even non-violent offenders to serve 85% of their sentence.  Arizona also has a reputation for being “tough” on crime, including police, prosecutors, courts, and statutes.  At the same time, a third of prison admissions are for drug offenses, yet practically none receive treatment.

Many states are reducing mandatory-minimum sentencing requirements, lessening sentences for lower-level crimes and increasing probation and parole as a means to drastically reduce their prison budgets.  States implementing such reforms report saving millions, and seeing a simultaneous reduction in crime rates (for instance, South Carolina reported saving $18 million over a four-year period, while crime fell 22%).
