Arpaio to be subject to independent oversight, ruling on possible criminal contempt charges delayed

A hearing was held this morning in the United State District Court in the ongoing matter of Melendres, et.al. v. Arpaio, et.al.

After a lengthy hearing, during which the majority of the discussion centered around the details of compensating the plaintiffs in the class-action suit (a case which has origin in a 2007 federal class-action suit filed by Latino drivers unjustly arrested and/or detained by Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) personnel, and which case is estimated to have cost Maricopa County $41 million dollars to date), Judge Snow has said he will delay his decision on whether Sheriff Joe Arpaio and several of his deputies will face criminal contempt charges in addition to the civil contempt findings issued in May.

For now, Judge Snow is attempting to select an independent monitor of the MCSO and its internal affairs.  Judge Snow will interview 4 candidates beginning next week; a decision is expected sometime prior to the next hearing in the case later this month.  The independent monitor is a temporary measure, yet the position is expected to last two years or more.
