Fox 10 Phoenix reporter John Hook will release the results of recent DNA testing in the unsolved 1978 Scottsdale, Arizona murder of actor Bob Crane, star of a popular TV program from the 1960’s called Hogan’s Heroes.
A friend of Crane’s, John Henry Carpenter, was suspected of the crime after the discovery of illicit videotape evidence linking him to Crane, and blood smears being found in a car Carpenter rented during a visit to Crane in Arizona. The blood found in Carpenter’s vehicle was tested at the time and found to be compatible with Crane’s rare blood type, however, DNA was still almost 20 years into the future. The Maricopa County Attorney’s office declined to file charges at that time.
After decades of inactivity and the emergence of DNA testing, the case was reexamined and led to murder charges being filed against Carpenter. Carpenter stood trial for the murder in 1994 and was acquitted. However, at the time of the trial DNA testing was not sophisticated enough to match the blood to Crane, and suspicions as to Carpenter’s guilt linger.
The program will air 11/14/16 at 9PM on Phoenix’s Fox 10 News.
