One-time suspect files civil suit

Leslie Merritt, Jr., once accused and jailed for 7 months as the suspected I-10 Freeway shooter, last week filed a civil suit in Maricopa County Superior Court against the State of Arizona, Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS) and Maricopa County Attorney Bill Montgomery alleging false arrest, false imprisonment, malicious prosecution, negligence, intentional infliction of emotional distress and aiding and abetting tortious conduct.

Attorneys for Mr. Merritt state there was never any legitimate evidence tying him to any of the still-unsolved 2015 shootings, and further argues the State and its agents knew this, that they presented false or deliberately misleading evidence to the grand jury and continued to press the case against Mr. Merritt in the face of mounting evidence he was not the perpetrator.

No monetary amount is named in the suit, though a notice of claim filed in the matter several months ago set the amount at $10 million dollars.
