Though the division has been around for many years, the FBI has recently launched a campaign to draw awareness to the availability of its Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3).
IC3 provides a reliable and convenient way to report suspected internet crime to the FBI, as well as establishing a kind of information clearinghouse about such crimes with law enforcement and industry representatives (for example, ISP’s, online retailers and banks), analyzing data, and informing the public of common complaint types and emerging trends. IC3’s 2015 annual report identified the three most common fraud types to be business e-mail compromise, personal email compromise and ransomware.
Phoenix is one among several FBI field offices nationwide taking part in the awareness campaign designed to highlight the ease and convenience of reporting suspected internet criminal activity, on their own behalf or as a third party. Other examples of such activity include intellectual property or theft of trade secret violations, computer hacking, money laundering, ID theft and more.
Officials suspect many victims of internet crime or scams do not report the incidents, either because they are unsure of where to do so or are ashamed.
