House Anti-DACA proposals defeated

6/22/16  Two House bills aimed at blocking the effectiveness of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) immigration policy have been defeated.

Since 2012, the DACA program has offered an opportunity for those brought to the US as children to earn a 2-year, renewable, legal non-citizen status if the person has no serious criminal convictions and meets certain other conditions (under 31; entered US before age 16; lived continuously in the US for at least 5 years; in school, graduated from school/GED or receive an honorable discharge from the military).

Republicans who sponsored the defeated proposals, one of which would have blocked payment of salaries to DACA recipients while the other would have prohibited them from enlisting altogether, would have let stand a very similar program but only for those with skills deemed desirable to the military (MAVNI, or Military Accessions Vital to the National Interest).

Given the fact only certain people who meet strict qualification guidelines are eligible for DACA and associated military service, it is hard to understand what justifies the determination to keep such folks from honorable US military service.
