A vigil was held Wednesday night, and a rally held Thursday, for a woman now in federal custody facing deportation after self-surrendering to the Maricopa County Jail to serve a 24-hour misdemeanor DUI jail sentence.
Elva Bernal is a mother and grandmother who has lived in Arizona for more than 30 years. During that time raising her family in Arizona, including her 5 children (all of whom are US citizens) and 6 grandchildren, Ms. Bernal has tried repeatedly to gain legal status over that time, but thus far has been denied.
Despite the appeal on Wednesday, Ms. Bernal was not released from Tent City on Thursday after her 1 day in jail, but was instead arrested by US Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers and remains in custody. A statement by the agency indicated removal proceedings would commence.
