A task force composed of legal experts from around the State this week submitted a report and recommendations to the Arizona Supreme Court geared toward generally reducing the imposition of court fines, fees, and penalties, providing alternatives where there is an inability to pay, and basing decisions about whether a person is eligible for pretrial release on the offense and on the likelihood of the defendant’s appearing in court, but without keeping people in jail based solely on an inability to pay.
Arizona taxpayers are estimated to spend $1 million dollars a day to operate jails statewide, and the task force report stated thousands of people are arrested and jailed each year in Arizona, solely because they can’t afford bail.
In addition, if bail is not a possibility some people resort to bail bond companies, which carries with it the risk of loss of home, property, and the bail bond fee for self, family or friends.
