3/30/16 Federal prosecutors withdrew Monday from the California USDC case against Apple, where they had sought to force the company to assist in disabling the security of its own tech products, after reporting success in hacking into the phone of one of the San Bernardino terror attack perpetrators. Officials have not stated whether the method used would be applied to other devices, nor whether it would be shared with Apple, who had requested the information.
Although the issue is now moot in the context of that case, underlying issues remain. The FBI is currently involved in several similar cases seeking access to encrypted information, as are prosecutors and police agencies around the country. Debate will continue due to civil liberties and right to privacy concerns versus the government’s stated purpose of investigating individual crimes.
